New Embassy Residence opens in Jakarta

New Embassy Residence opens in Jakarta: The Complex for the German Ambassador combines local Traditions and modern Architecture

After around nine years of intensive planning and construction, the new residence of the German ambassador in Jakarta has been opened. Completed in September 2025, the new building by Eller + Eller Architects is an example of modern, functional architecture that also takes into account the climatic and cultural conditions of Indonesia. The complex was built on the site of the former ambassador’s residence and blends harmoniously into the surrounding buildings.

The building is divided into two structures connected by a spacious foyer. This structure allows for a clear separation between the official and private areas of the residence. The southern part of the building houses the representative rooms such as the foyer, reception room, music room, and study. The ground floor also houses the service area, while the upper floor accommodates the private living quarters of the ambassador’s family. This functional layout ensures short distances and a high degree of privacy.

The representative areas—foyer, reception room, and music hall—are flexibly connected by sliding doors that divide the space, allowing for different room configurations for events. A covered terrace surrounds the reception rooms. The ambassador’s family’s private rooms are accessible via a separate entrance, which ensures independent use even during public events. These private living areas on the first floor are grouped around an interior patio that provides light, air, and retreat. The monsoon-driven climate with rainy and dry seasons, as well as Jakarta’s high earthquake risk, place special demands on the building’s construction.

With the new building for the German ambassador, Germany now has a modern, functionally well-designed, and representative residence in Jakarta that meets the requirements of contemporary diplomatic use while also creating space for hospitality and encounters.

What a Finale! Thats a wrap for the NAX North America Tour in NYC. Last week marked the end of an incredible journey across North America for the Network for Architecture Exchange (NAX). There was no better place to conclude our tour than New York City, where we spent the final 48 hours diving deep into “Continental Dialogues” between European and American architecture Our final days were packed with high-level roundtables, innovation tours, and exclusive office visits that perfectly capped off the trip.

Highlights from the NYC Finale: Policy & Practice: We started strong at German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. – GACC New York (Susanne Gellert and Deputy consul General to New York Carsten Ruepke) followed by an insightful roundtable with the AIA New York | Center for Architecture (Suzanne Mecs, Hon. AIA NYState, Nikolaus Arnold, Tirschwell Annie, Graciela Carrillo, FAIÀ, NOMA, NCARB, LEED AP, Michael Stein, Juergen Riehm, Rutger Huiberts, AlA)

Global Discourse: A memorable evening exchange with CTBUH New York Chapter at the Goethe-Institut e.V. New York exploring the architectural relationship between our two countries. (Oliver Schaper, Paul Clemens Bart, Lukas Utzig, Astrid Lipka, Juergen Riehm, Moderator Andrew R. Haas and CTBUH/CVU’s Co-Chair: Peyman Askari and to Jörg Schumacher for hosting this special event). Innovation: A fascinated deep dive into the Brooklyn Navy Yard with a visit to Newlab guided by Mark Chambers from Terreform ONE®.

Icons: We concluded the professional program with an exclusive office tour at  Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) (Angela Huang, AlA, Christoph Timm).

A massive thank you to all our partners for opening your doors, hosting these critical conversations, and making the grand finale of our tour a resounding success!
